It’s never too late to follow your writing dream – Caroline James

Five years ago, with time creeping on, I had an epiphany. Start writing!♥

My writing dream began way back, when as an unhappy teen at an all girl’s grammar school, I left home, much to my parents’ horror and for a couple of years I waited tables on the south coast. I’d always wanted to write but having messed up school, knew that it was impossible.

I decided instead, that hotel life was for me and I studied, worked hard and eventually ended up owning my own pub, followed by a country house hotel in Cumbria. I still had a burning desire to write but having had a poor start with education, which I endeavoured to put right along the way, believed that I wasn’t good enough. No one would want to read my work. I had every excuse; life was too busy with a demanding job, frequent disasters, family to care for and many responsibilities. There was no time to indulge my writing fantasy.

My hotel was a revolving door for ideas, with a collection of eclectic guests coming and going and a story began to take shape in my head. It demanded to be written but it was many years later, following my epiphany, that I determined to begin and adhered my rear to a chair and dusted off my laptop. It was frustrating, exhausting and difficult as I snatched hours early in the morning and late at night but eventually, Coffee Tea the Gypsy & Me was born.

Next, I trawled through publishers and agents but no one wanted to know and I felt like giving up as the rejection slips piled high. In frustration, I self-published. I’m no expert in publicity, nor did I ever imagine that the story would take off but shortly after publication the book went to number three in women’s fiction on Amazon, was E-book of the Week in The Sun and a small publisher wanted to take a follow-on. Three novels later and thrillingly, I signed with the award-winning independent British publisher, ChocLit, under their new imprint, Ruby Fiction.

I wrote, The Best Boomerville Hotel, my new novel, because I wanted a book that is uplifting for older and younger readers alike and to show that by taking on new challenges, life can be wonderful as you age. Stepping out of your day to day and putting yourself to the test is daunting and damn hard work. Doing it at a later stage of life can be doubly hard but many successful writers started writing in their later years and I believe that by coming out of your comfort zone you release new energy that will recharge your creative batteries.

It’s never too late to follow your dream. My writing dream is coming true and I hope that for those aspiring writers out there, the same will happen to you.
