I’m Estelle Maskame, the author of the Did I Mention I Love You? trilogy. I’m twenty years old, but have been writing ever since I was young when I was introduced to creative writing at school.

I absolutely fell in love with it and so I began writing at home as a hobby on top of writing at school because I could never get enough of it. I was constantly in my room writing short stories and when I was twelve, I wrote my first Young Adult romance novel, which will never see the light of day ever again because it absolutely sucks.

When I was thirteen, I started the Did I Mention I Love You? trilogy. I was desperate for someone to read it and give me feedback, because now that I was in secondary school, we weren’t doing creative writing anymore. I was too embarrassed to show my parents or my friends, so I posted my work online instead to the writing community that is known as Wattpad. People ended up really enjoying it, and it blew up into something much bigger than I ever imagined. I promoted the books across social media and built up a large following over the course of three and a half years by posting new chapters whenever I had written them.

My readers were pretty dedicated – they would make fan art and fan trailers, and they become my own little fanbase that were always there to support me (and still are!). I ended up garnering over four million hits on Wattpad, and so I ended up in the news across my country, talking about my large online following. I went from local newspapers to being on TV, and through word-of-mouth, my publisher discovered me. They reached out and were super interested in my work, and a month later, I signed my first ever book deal with them.

I left school and I’ve been writing full-time ever since! It’s been such an amazing journey and I’m so glad I decided to put myself out there when I was young, because it allowed me to carve my own path to success through hard work and determination. I utilised social media as best I could, especially Twitter, and I stayed active and consistent to maintain the fanbase that I’d built around myself. It definitely wasn’t the traditional route into publishing, but it worked for me, and I hope to see other authors get discovered the same way!

Estelle Maskame started writing at the age of 13 and completed her DIMILY trilogy when she was 16. Translation rights have been sold in 16 territories and have become international bestsellers. Estelle won the Young Scot Arts Award in 2016, and has been shortlisted for the Young Adult award at the Romantic Novel of the Year Awards. Her new novel, Dare to Fall, was published on August 3rd by Ink Road.
